Sculpture, whether figurative or abstract, succeeds or fails according to its use of negative as well as positive space.
The space surrounding the forms, as viewed from every angle, are as integral to the piece as are the forms themselves.
What appeals to me most about a work of sculpture is its ability to enter the viewer's physical space and connect in a very personal and immediate way.
