Thomas Upson

Thomas Upson's interest in marine art began at an early age, from summmer vacations on the Cape, and an early interest in ships. "I saw a submarine movie when I was a little kid," he says. "That grew into an interest in ships and boats in general. Combine that with my family's vacations at the shore and I was hooked." By the age of 10 he was already starting to draw ships and the oceans they sailed.
"Different vessels each have their own character, and part of the challenge is to capture that," he notes. "But the real chalenge for me, lies in capturing the "wetness" of the sea and its ever changing patterns of wave and surf. No two scenes are ever the same."
Mr. Upson graduated in 1981 from the Hartford Art School, where he studied under Rudolph Zalinger. His watercolors have been exhibited in several Cape Galleries, as well as Boston and the North Shore. He is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association, the American Society of Marine Artists and the Creative Art Center.
